A word about my weakness

chr15m and Fenris' set last night was pretty awesome :) Most of the retrocomputing related tracks I listen to are either very purist "single c64 with no added hardware" SID-tunes, or remixes of classic game and demo music performed on modern hardware. In either case, the tracks are built entirely offline with no live involvement. This was a very different beast indeed.

Two headless c64s augmented with pots sticking through their casing feeding through effects pedals, a GBA, a GP2X, and two masters of their instruments moving back and forth triggering loops, adjusting filter levels and effects, playing fragments and changing places without missing a beat. The sound was immersive, engaging, hypnotic and unique.

Ironing boards as easily portable and height adjustable trestle tables for equipment! So cool and practical :)

I still can't believe they boot their c64s from tape. chr15m; I can't find the product page for the MMC64 (SD interface for c64) on the Individual Computers website, but the manual is linked from the manuals tab at http://www.jschoenfeld.com/indexe.html, and there are contact details somewhere there. If you decide to snaffle, I may be interested in going in on a group order.

The Velvet Lounge was a good venue. Atmospheric, intimate (was great to be able to just wander up close to the performers), and excellent sound quality. The VJing certainly added to the atmosphere, but the stuff they'd prepared earlier left much of their live work looking like something of an afterthought. The music before and after the live set was fabulous. I can't remember how $10au for a vodka+redbull compares to what I used to pay in Newcastle, but I suspect it's fairly similar (around 4GBP). Oh, and yay for the smoking ban!

Was great to catch up with _kstar_, who I've been meaning to get in touch with since getting back from the UK, and to meet her friend Simone. A post performance side trip to Sin was considered, but the music we had at the time was apparently fairly similar and apathy won out for the time being. Will definitely have to trundle along at some point in the future though, if the aural delights where we were was any guide :)

Sorry I couldn't make it - transcendancing made me a very tempting offer.
